Letter to Teacher

My name is Danielle Bachmann.  I am a third grade teacher at Fontenelle Elementary School in the Omaha Public Schools district.  I have been teaching at Fontenelle for the past four years. I attended Creighton University where I started off in nursing. I realized that I love working with kids so I decided to change my major.  After a year of nursing school I changed my major to elementary education. I graduated from Creighton in 2007 with a degree in elementary education.  Along with teaching I also coach boys and girls soccer at Fontenelle.  I am married to a wonderful guy named Mitch and we have a beautiful daughter named Aubrey who will turn 2 in April.
I feel like I have a lot of experiences with technology.  I grew up using technology and attended Omaha North High School where they had a focus in technology.  Many of my experiences of using technology are good memories.  The school in which I teach at has implemented many different types of technology.  In my classroom I have an active board, 6 computers, and an ELMO.  I use the technology everyday in my classroom.  We even watch our schools morning announcements on the computer.  I would say that I am a PC user.  I however, have two Mac computers in my classroom.  I do prefer my PC over the Macs though.  I also attend professional development courses in which my district offers on the different types of technology such as activboards and clickers.  I also work with our technology teacher to create meaningful lessons for my students.  At home I use Microsoft 2007 however at school we use Microsoft 2003.
I always wanted to continue my education.  I looked into different programs that would fit my schedule.  I chose Peru State College because I was able to do it all online.  Not having a specific day and time I had to be sitting in a class was also one of the reasons why I chose Peru.  Since I have a young daughter I liked being able to complete the courses on my own time.  After I graduate I plan on still teaching.  I enjoy being a teacher and I hope that by completing my degree I may have more opportunities open to me in the future.  However, for right now I love teaching 3rd grade and working with the students in my class.

  1. Hello Danielle. Welcome to class. You have quite an extensive background of using a variety of technology. I hope you enjoy your courses at Peru State. The flexibility of the online program makes it a wonderful fit for a working mother. Best wishes!

  2. Hi Danielle. It sounds like you have had wonderful experiences with various types of technology throughout your schooling and career. I wish that I would have been exposed to technology sooner. I took computer classes in high school and college, but I just don't feel I got the knowledge and experience that I should have. I feel like often I am playing catch up. I have learned so much in the last couple of years however, because technology is a focus in our district right now. I agree with you that Peru is great because of the online flexibility. I too have a young child and it makes it nice to be able to get on and work at different times. It was good to get to know you a little better! Good luck in the rest of this class!

  3. You are very lucky to have the technology experience. I think that is what it comes down to for many teachers, getting training and exposure. We need to embrace the use of technology for sure and it can't happen without opportunity and proper training. I am thankful for taking classes like this one that is for sure. Good luck to you!

  4. Sounds like we have a lot in common. I started out in nursing and then switched to education also. (I decided I wasn't sure I could give anyone a shot!) It has been a good choice for me. Hope you feel the same!
